Sugar Scrubs

What improves your skin's appearance by exfoliating, is gentle enough to use all over your body, and even leaves skin moisturized? I'll give you a hint: you can use it to soften rough skin on your elbows, prep skin for tanning, give yourself a quick pedicure, and have a comfy, close shave. Any guesses? Of course, I'm talking about sugar scrubs! (Bet you didn't know sugar scrubs could do so many things!)

I first tried sugar scrubs when they were given to me as a gift, and I've been hooked ever since. What an indulgence! When I started making my own scrubs, I chose my ingredients carefully to provide maximum benefits. Some of the alpha hydroxy acids commonly used in skin products come from sugar—a natural source of the glycolic acid that helps to loosen dead skin cells for exfoliation. Along with these natural, mild acids, the sugar's roughness will give you a fresh "new skin" glow in no time!

The sunflower and grape seed oils in our scrub are light and easily absorbed, which means their natural fatty acids and vitamins get soaked right up to start protecting and soothing. The tiny bit of beeswax in our scrub forms a light barrier on the skin to hold in the moisture without clogging the pores. The jojoba spheres and fruit seeds
we add for color are extra exfoliants, the preservative in our formula extends shelf life, and a hint of fragrance from essential oils and/or fragrance oils makes the experience complete!

How Do YOU Scrub?
For head-to-toe exfoliating, apply scrub before showering or bathing. Step into the shower and before turning on the water, scoop out a bit of scrub and rub gently onto your skin with your hand or a washcloth. Use a circular motion and avoid broken or bruised skin. Then turn on the shower and rinse sugar away. Be careful—the oils will leave the shower surfaces slippery!
Remember that adding water to the scrub will dissolve the sugars and make the scrub less "scratchy." For sensitive skin areas or for your face, apply a bit of scrub to a damp washcloth and wipe on gently, then rinse away. Use less scrub for milder exfoliation, more for a vigorous application...apply on dry skin for more abrasion, damp skin for a gentler effect.
Rejuvenating dry, tired hands is easy! Scoop out a bit of scrub onto clean, dry hands and rub together as if you're washing them. Work sugar into both sides and your wrists, too. Rinse or wipe away sugars, then pat dry and enjoy the moisturizing oils that remain. Add a bit of moisturizing hand cream and a pair of gloves for even more pampering!
Use the same treatment for your feet, but start by soaking for 10 to 15 minutes in warm water. Rub rough areas with a pumice stone for even more exfoliation and callous removal, then rinse and pat feet dry. Apply scrub as described for hands, making sure to rub gently into tops and heels. Then rinse and pat dry. Apply some peppermint foot cream for a cooling, soothing finish!
Make a simple Tropical Twist Sugar Scrub in your kitchen!
  • 3 T coconut oil (unrefined has the best fragrance!)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (brown sugar, demarara, or granulated all work great)
  • Essential oils as desired, optional (we recommend lime and/or grapefruit, up to 20 drops total)

Mix all ingredients in a resealable container, then follow some of our tips for usage!

Make your own scrubs
Use sugar scrubs:
  • To exfoliate before tanning
  • In place of shaving cream on your legs for a smooth, close shave
  • For eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, or other skin conditions which may benefit from exfoliation (check with your doctor first!)
  • For a quick manicure
  • To soften and moisturize dry skin
  • For an invigorating pedicure
  • As a gift or favor at pamper spa parties

We've even heard that some ladies undergoing chemotherapy use sugar scrubs as a gentle way to remove remaining hairs from the scalp. Talk with us if you'd like a special formulation of scrubs without fragrance or preservative.

Why not salt scrubs?
We love salts—the minerals in sea salts are wonderfully healing, Epsom salts are soothing, and salts can stimulate the production of natural oils. But we have found salt crystals too sharp for scrubs, and they also can sting! We love how sugar scrub can be used all over (and won't send you through the roof if it touches a scratch), and for these reasons we prefer to have our salts in soaks instead of scrubs.
